STATE OF BENGAL short bio.1 - MAIN COLLABORATOR

STATE OF BENGAL is one of the Key Dj / Producers to have emerged from the Cutting Edge British Asian Music scene that emerged in the late 90's that gave birth to the 'Asian Underground' movement. His reputation as one of the most innovative and pioneering artists is still held today as he continues to pushes the boundaries with his varied projects and albums.

His reputation as an innovative and exciting producer / Dj was projected further at the cutting edge Anokha club nites where he was one of the Key Dj's. His music and unique Dj style of weaving an eclectic mix , from Indian Classical, breakbeat, Hip-Hop, tabla driven beats, melodic vocals to smashed up beats and funk was instrumental in the success and aesthetic of the highly acclaimed club nite. His eruptive tracks Flight IC408 and Chittagong Chill, featured on Talvin Singh's Anokha compilation became the anthems of the scene, the industry and media hailed the tracks as groundbreaking and they still have the power to explode the dance floor today. SOB's respected reputation ensured him to be courted by several major labels, culminating in a deal with Indie Label, One Little Indian in Sep 97. It was at Anokha; Bjork discovered and fell in love with SOB's music and unique Djing style, She was so inspired that she asked him to open for her world tour and remix the track 'Hunter' for her Homogenic album (end of 97) and a musical friendship was struck. Their mutual respect as artist developed that led to Bjork pursuing Sam to sign up to her label One Little Indian.

State Of Bengal's reputation for pushing the boundaries and 'stepping out' to produce eclectic 'out of the box' albums as well as his archives of dance tracks has gained him further and continuing respect as one of the innovators and Pioneer's of the British Asian music scene. At present state of Bengal is working on 2 concept idea's including SKIP-IJ, a dance music conceptÉ..watch out for this one its gonna be hopping IN and OUT of the box!

JAZZHEAD CHRONIC DJ MICKEY SMITH

BIO

Creative Arts Entrepreneur Michael Smith is an award winning Art Director, Graphic Designer, Copywriter, Screen Writer, Graphic Designer, Digital Musician and DJ. Since 1986 Michael has been working initially behind and now at the forefront of the global communication arts scene. Working as a Magazine designer aged 19, before heading off to the Middle East to head his first Creative Advertising department as an Art Director at a US$30 Million advertising agency at the age of 20. 1988 saw Michael return to London joining Lewis Broadbent Advertising NPD and ULTIMATE ANIMATES award winning creature workshop as head writer, before moving onto stints at Gold Greenlees Trott London in its late 80s hey day, then as Snr Art Director at both Dentsu Young & Rubicon and
J Walter Thompson Hong Kong, finally progressing to the position of copy based Creative Director of Metro Broadcast Radio at the age of 28.

It was in Hong Kong that Michael first began to follow his love of music running A Cool Vibe Thang Hong Independently between 1992 and 1997, developing campaigns to promote major Live International Acts and DJs as part of long running events like The Rebirth Of Cool, Licensed To Chill and The legendary monthly concert season ‘The Cool Vibe Review’. All of which were hosted at DJ level by Michael as JAZZHEAD DJ Mickey Smith. The 5 years of events forever changing the Hong Kong musical landscape ‘permanently’. Mickey recently hailed as “The Godfather of the Hong Kong scene” [South China Morning Post] when returning for a DJ engagement in 2003.

Artists promoted and DJ Hosted by Michael as Jazzhead DJ Mickey Smith between 92 and 97 include Gil Scott Heron, Lonnie Liston Smith, Lee Scratch Perry, Galliano, Urban Species, Kyoto Jazz Massive, United Future Organisation, JTQ, Mondo Grosso, Monday Michiru, Attica Blues, Norman Jay, Adrian Sherwood, Ed Piller, James Lavelle, DJ Krush Vs DJ Shadow, Nobukazu Takemuura, The Herbaliser Vs DJ Food, Snowboy + more. In addition to conceiving all events, sourcing / booking all artists, preparing and signing all sponsorship, conceiving and designing all promo material as well as hosting all events at DJ level, Michael also found time to play-list and present his own weekly Radio Show [A Cool Vibe Thang], wrote and presented for Asia Television and regularly contributed as a Music journalist for the likes of SCMP and BC magazine.

Both in terms of idea or staging.

As well as hosting regular events with The Afrocentric Shrine Collective other Events of note staged by Michael included the Notting Hill Carnival Live ‘Resurrected’ Stage 2000, where Mickey ran the 2nd Major stage behind radio 1.
